The space
Tucked away at the end of a country track, Marsh Cottage was once the home of the marshman who tended to the cattle grazing on the marshes here, and the restoration has retained the period features of this traditional Broadland cottage – the original brick floors, beams and a cosy wood-burning stove. Inside, one pretty bedroom with a comfortable king size bed and a large spacious living area with rustic touches. This is still the peaceful hideaway of the marshman’s days: the setting is idyllic, with views over the garden to the RSPB marshes and open fields with cattle grazing.
Nearby the acclaimed Wheatfen Broad is an important nature reserve as is Strumpshaw Fen across the river, and the area is criss-crossed with footpaths and charming riverside walks – the Wherryman’s Way long distance footpath passes close to the cottage. A motor launch can be hired locally to explore further the magical waterways of the Broads and enjoy the many riverside inns
Under five miles away, the splendid city of Norwich, dominated by the magnificent cathedral and Norman castle, is said to be the most complete medieval city in Britain and offers great shopping and dining as well as historic treasures. The traditional seaside resort of Great Yarmouth and the stunning North Norfolk Heritage Coast can both be reached in just under an hour.
Guest access
Marsh Cottage is at the end of a bumpy rough track less than half a mile long. It can get very wet and muddy in the winter months. Parking is in a grass courtyard adjacent to the cottage and the courtyard has a gate that can be locked.
Other things to note
Marsh Cottage is available for SHORT STAYS ONLY in the LOW SEASON. Our start day is a Sunday for weekly bookings and a Thursday or Sunday for short stays. We are very happy to accept pets and they are very welcome at the nearby pub. We only allow one large dog or two small dogs and we charge £25 per dog. The cottage is on the Wherrymans Way with a vast array of walks in both directions. The track can flood when there is a tidal surge but this does not affect the cottage itself as it is on higher ground. Normally the flood waters subside within a few hours.
